The Breckinridge Digital Studio (BDS) is a self-serve digitization studio located in the Breckinridge Research Room (BRR) available to all registered students, faculty, staff, and community members wishing to scan their personal research materials.

Equipment Availability

All equipment in the BDS is made available on a first come, first served basis. The BDS will have available the following equipment:

  • Bookeye 4 color planetary scanner
    • Best for papers, books, and photographs
    • Accommodates flat and bound items up to 18 x 24.4 inches
    • Scans up to 600 dpi
    • Scans in full color or grayscale
  • Plustek OpticFilm 8200i SE film scanner
    • 35mm negatives and mounted slides
    • Scan area: 1.45 x 1.0" (36.8 x 25.4 mm)
    • Scans up to 7200 dpi
    • Scans in full color
  • FotodioX LED Studio-in-a-Box tabletop studio
    • Best for photographing small to medium sized objects
    • Accommodates items up to 25 x 25 inches
    • Includes interior LED lighting and blue, gray, black, and white background drops
    • Camera not supplied, users must bring own camera

Guests are encouraged to supply their own storage devices, although 8g thumb drives are available at the research desk if needed.

Check in

All researchers wishing to use the BDS are required to create a Research Services Account and must agree to and comply with all patron policies governing the BRR and BDS, as well as University of Kentucky regulations governing access to and use of university information technology resources. Researchers will be asked to supply a valid photo ID to the Research Desk Staff upon check in. IDs will be kept at the Research Desk throughout your stay in the BDS and returned upon checkout.

Materials Review

All personal research materials intended for digitization in the BDS are subject to review by SCRC staff to ensure that materials do not pose a risk to SCRC’s collections, equipment, or environment.

Restricted items include, but are not limited to:

  • Weapons
  • Foods
  • Liquids
  • Wet or Moldy items

Technical Support

SCRC staff are available for basic technical support with BDS equipment. If advanced technical support, troubleshooting, or training is required, please contact Sarah Dorpinghaus, Director of Digital Services, to schedule a one-on-one appointment with SCRC’s Digital Lab team.


Scanning of materials and obtaining usage rights is solely the responsibility of the patron. Researchers utilizing the BDS assume all liability in the use of BDS equipment for digitization of personal research materials. Complete details regarding assumption of risk are included in the patron registration and user agreement document included in your Research Services Account registration.
